Hi

It’s been a very long time. We’ve been well all the time but this blog has been in a kind of coma. I kept thinking in blog-posts, but starting with my usual summer-blogging-sluggishness I found that my lack of time and technical equipment made it too frustrating to really post something. Anything. Now I’m still working full-time (more than ever, actually), but I got a new camera and a laptop of my own. Before I shared the computer with my family especially watching eyeTV, so I usually only got to do something fun with it when everyone else was in bed. Mostly getting my daily fix of apartment therapy and pinterest. And maybe a game of Mahjong or two. As far as I can tell from the last two weeks since I own this little acer-baby I won’t be kicking these bad habits anytime soon, but now I hope to be able to squeeze in some blogging during daytime. The other main reason for being absent was my growing frustration with my really bad photos. Back in the old days, when blogging was still relatively new and pinterest didn’t exist, taking good photos wasn’t that important, at least not to me, I was happy to see and do a decent shot with my point-and-shoot-camera. But, being a cold-and-grey-winterdays-blogger I always had problems with lighting. Well, the blogging-world matured, but neither my camera nor my skills as a photographer did. I’m working on that one now, though I still find it intimidating but I hope it’s like learning how to drive: In the beginning I couldn’t imagine that one day I’d be able to shift gears without even thinking about it and anticipating most traffic situations. And: I decided to keep it real. Maybe I’ve had an overdose of all these picture-perfect pictures, but all this perfection on AT and pinterest bores me increasingly. It’s still nice for inspiration and aspiration to see perfectly staged living-rooms with cords all hidden or rustic cakes elaborately styled with just the right amount of crumbs beneath, but: my life (and my home and my cakes) is certainly not perfect but good enough. And yes, I still like to share it with you. Because I’m curious myself (I’m a big fan of house-tours and enjoy peeking into other people’s windows on winter-evenings), because I like tutorials and recipes and think it’s only fair to give something in return and yes, because I like to show off and brag, like all the other people blogging about their lives, I guess. Which leads me to the question of relevance: does this world need this blog? Certainly not. There are thousands of more interesting, more beautiful, more helpful and more consistent blogs out there and frankly, in the transition to this laptop I cut down the list of my favourites and subscriptions by 2/3 myself, I’m not reading all these blogs anymore, if ever. But apart from that ego-thing there is still my longing of being part of a creative community and, occasionally, remote friends and my mother-in-law dropping by (and complaining that there hasn’t been anything new for a very long time ;-)). So here we go, I’m planning on wasting more web-space for as long as I feel like it. And adorn it with real pictures of my real home:

Well, just…/ Nur so…

Well, just to say ‘Hi’ in between laundry and other ‘projects’, the weather is back to rotten (driving sleet, eek!) and I’ve got the feeling of endless time on my hands because finally it’s two weeks of Easter holidays! In this teacher’s household this is a reason to celebrate, not that I don’t like my job, but it is exhausting at times, so it’s better to reload my personal battery now. Only doing and making nice things. Or even just nothing. Like laundry?! Ha!

And while doing ‘nothing’ I listen to Freunde von Freunden Mixtape 13. I like most of the FvF mixtapes, but this one is my favourite, especially the first third. Jep, I’m an eighties-gal (remember Grace Jones?)!

Nur so um mal ‘Hallo’ zusagen, so zwischen Wäsche machen und anderen ‘Projekten’. Das Wetter ist wieder gruselig (Schneeregen!) und ich habe das Gefühl unendlich viel Zeit zu haben, denn endlich beginnen zwei Wochen Osterferien! In diesem Lehrerhaushalt ein Grund zum Feiern, auch wenn ich meinen Job mag, so ist er doch recht anstrengend, also besser jetzt den Akku wieder aufladen. Nur schöne Dinge tun und machen. Oder sogar gar nichts. Wie Wäsche machen? Ha!

Beim Nichtstun höre ich zur Zeit Freunde von Freunden Mixtape 13. Ich mag die meisten FvF Mixtapes, aber das hier ist mein Liebling, besonders das erste Drittel. Japp, ich bin ein 80er-Mädel (Grauzone?!)!

Sweet spring

On Friday our balcony was finished, we got a new deck. And just in time, as this weekend is the first real outdoor springtime-weather. Of course the sonntagssüß had to be taken outside on the freshly made balcony. And as I had prepared the macaron-shells and the carrot-cake in a glass the weekend before, I didn’t have to waste a ray of sunshine by spending too much time in the kitchen. The cream-cheese frosting and fillings of the macarons were made while the coffee was brewing. Now I’m off gardening and thus exercising away all these yummy calories…

Am Freitag wurde unsere Dachterrasse fertig, wir haben ein neues Deck bekommen. Und gerade noch rechtzeitig, denn dieses Wochenende ist das erste richtige Frühlings-draußensei-Wetter. Natürlich musste das sonntagssüß draußen auf dem Balkon eingenommen werden. Und weil ich die Macaron-Hälften  und den Karottenkuchen im Glas schon letztes Wochenende gebacken hatte, habe ich keinen Sonnenstrahl damit verschwendet, dass ich zu viel Zeit in der Küche verbracht habe. Die Füllungen und den Guss habe ich gemacht, während der Kaffee kochte. Jetzt geh’ ich wieder raus in den Garten und arbeite die leckeren Kalorien ab…

Antlers on chalkboard / Geweih auf Tafel

Usually posts or articles of the before-and-after kind start with a ‘before’-pic. Too bad, because that’s usually the ugliest – and who wants an ugly header? Therefore I begin this post with a nice photo of my studio’s door today, that pretty much sums everything up.

I started off with my recently painted all-white door, masking tape and chalkboard-paint.

Much nicer, but still blah. I had no idea what to write or draw (lorem ipsum… anyone?). But then I remembered the cute antlers seen on fun.kyti.me. Printing the post (to get an idea how drawn antlers look like), pinning it next to the chalkboard, drawing and making cute little paper-flowers was done in less than 20 minutes, the hardest part was actually peeling off the double-sided tape.

Now I like my door much better (and if I ever change my mind it’s so easily altered or even removed).

Normalerweise beginnen vorher-nachher -Posts oder Artikel mit einem ‘vorher’-Foto. Blöd, denn das ist meistens das Hässlichste – und wer will schon einen hässlichen Aufmacher? Deshalb beginne ich dieses Post mit einem hübschen Foto von meiner Arbeitszimmertür heute, die eigentlich schon alles zusammenfasst.

Ich habe mit meiner erst kürzlich lackierten Tür, Malerkrepp und Tafelfarbe losgelegt. Das war schon schöner, aber immer noch gähn. Mir fiel nichts zu schreiben oder zeichnen ein (lorem ipsum… hm?). Aber dann erinnerte ich mich an das gezeichnete Geweih bei fun.kyti.me. Ausdrucken, ankleben (damit ich eine Ahnung habe, wie ein gezeichnetes Geweih aussieht), zeichnen und Serviettenblümchen-basteln war in weniger als 20 Minuten erledigt, am nervigsten war noch das Abpulen des doppelseitigen Klebebands. Jetzt gefällt mir meine Tür richtig gut ( und falls ich’s mir übersehe kann ich’s ganz schnell ändern oder sogar ganz entfernen).

Spring-Bling

If you change the decor in your home going with the seasons or in anticipation of holidays and festivities, the time between winter and spring, or the time between Valentine and Easter is a time of transition. Many people weary of winter bring in tulips and daffodils, although outside snowdrops are just about to bloom. Others still have some Christmas decoration around, just because it’s blingy and cozy when it’s often still dark and cold outside. And quite a lot of people have both at the same time. Eek! Well, I admit, I still have our Ikea-Glimma-wreath in the window (the bling-thing) and underneath on the windowsill are hyacinths (the spring-thing). But now I found something decowise that fits outstandingly into this time: The Chilly Geometric Garland, downloadable and printable at urbanoutfitters. I love the pastel colours and the simplicity at this time of the year, combining bling and spring but not too much of both. Here is my version, hung on a birch-branch above our dining-table:

Wenn man die Deko zuhause mit den Jahreszeiten oder in Erwartung von Festtagen wechselt, ist die Zeit zwischen Winter und Frühjahr bzw. zwischen Valentinstag und Ostern eine Zeit des Übergangs. Viele wintermüde Menschen stellen sich Tulpen oder Narzissen ins Haus während draußen gerade die Schneeglöckchen anfangen zu blühen. Andere haben noch ihre Weihnachtsdeko, einfach weil’s so schön glitzert und gemütlich ist wenn’s draußen oft noch dunkel und kalt ist. Und ziemlich viele Leute haben beides gleichzeitig. Irgs! Ich geb’s zu, ich habe noch den Ikea-Glimma-Kranz im Esszimmerfenster (Glitzer!) und gleichzeitig darunter Hyazinthen auf der Fensterbank (Frühling!). Aber jetzt habe ich etwas dekomäßiges gefunden, was hervorragend in diese Zeit passt: die Chilly Geometric Garland, herunterladbar und ausdruck-und erbastelbar bei urbanoutfitters.  Die Pastelfarben und die Einfachheit liebe ich zu dieser Jahreszeit. Oben ist meine Version, aufgehängt an einem Birkenast über unserem Esstisch.

The studio / Das Arbeitszimmer

Well, getting things done and then doing other things and then some more instead of posting about them immediately has an advantage. It’s easier to edit and to show things in another order than the chronological chaos in which things happen. Or you can speed up a (still chronological) progress. As I was bragging about my new studio last post I show you the before, in between and after:

Es hat Vorteile, erst Dinge zu erledigen, dann andere Sachen zu machen und dann noch ein bisschen mehr zu tun bevor man gleich darüber postet. Man kann leichter eine Auswahl treffen und die Dinge in einer anderen Reihenfolge als im chronologischen Chaos der Geschehnisse zeigen. Oder man kann diesen chronologischen Ablauf im Zeitraffer sehen. Da ich im letzten Post mit meinem neuen Arbeitszimmer angegeben habe, folgt hiermit das vorher, zwischendrin und nachher.

Last Saturday I had (well, still have) a runny nose and some repainting underway, but nevertheless we decided to do some ‘dry-shopping’ (like window-shopping but you actually go into the shops, you just don’t really buy anything) at stilwerk, one of our favourite design dry-shopping places. We looked at different pieces of furniture, sat on some new outdoor-chairs, discussed items we’d never ever want in our house even if we were millionaires and strolled this way into the sales area. Among other furniture, some nice and some not so nice, was a lounger by moroso, a piece we’d long liked to have if we were millionaires, but we aren’t. I sat down, estimated the sales offer and turned the tag to check and – couldn’t believe it: under € 500,-! I double-checked if this wasn’t the tag for a side-table or a lamp close by, but no, it was real and not too good to be true. Lovely flower-power, it’s Antibodi by Patrizia Urquiola. Well, this dry-shopping got quite wet. Here it is in its new home:

But then some other changes in our home had to follow: we had to find a new place for the red sofa with the white slipcover, now replaced by the beauty above. We turned our dining-table 90°, moved our heavy glass-cabinet (thus exposing several years of dust and cobwebs, urgh), turned the dining-light-fixture as well and exchanged the rocking-chair next to the fire with an armchair. Voilá, it feels like a new home! Better so, because we can’t afford going out this month now.

Letzten Samstag hatte ich die Nase und ein Anstreichprojekt am Laufen, aber trotzdem wollten wir noch im stilwerk ‘Trockenshoppen’ (also so tun also ob, ohne Geld ausgeben). Wir haben uns verschiedene Möbel angesehen, auf neuen Gartenstühlen gesessen und uns über Dinge heißgeredet, die uns auch dann nicht ins Haus kämen wenn wir Millionäre wären. So schlenderten wir in den Sale-Bereich und zwischen anderen Möbeln, hübsch und weniger hübsch, war eine Liege von moroso, ein Stück welches wir schon länger gerne hätten wenn wir Millionäre wären, sind wir aber nicht. Ich setzte mich, schätzte den Angebotspreis und drehte das Preisschild um, um’s zu überprüfen und – konnte es nicht glauben: unter € 500,-! Noch Mal hingeschaut ob’s nicht für’n Beistelltisch oder eine Lampe in der Nähe gilt, aber nein, es stimmte und war nicht zu schön um wahr zu sein. Die Flowerpower heißt Antibodi von Patrizia Urquiola. Dieses Trockenshoppen wurde ziemlich nass. Oben sieht man’s in seinem neuen Zuhause. Das zog natürlich weitere Veränderungen nach sich: wir mussten einen neuen Platz für das rote Sofa mit der weißen Husse finden, also Esstisch um 90° drehen, die schwere Glasvitrine weiterschieben (dabei mehrere Jahre Staub und Spinnweben freilegen, urgh) und auch die Esstischlampe um 90° drehen, also neu anbringen, dann den Schaukelstuhl durch den Sessel ersetzen und voilá, jetzt fühlt es sich wie ein neues Zuhause an! Das ist auch besser so, denn Ausgehen können wir uns diesen Monat nicht mehr leisten.
